Vimy Ridge

Today, April 8 being the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the battle of Vimy Ridge, is a good time to post a photo of Grandpa Nevard. I never paid enough attention or bothered to get the details from him but family history has it that he was in the battle. He enjoyed talking of his war time experiences but at the time I just was not that interested and can remember only a few details. He used to point out this photo and comment that he was the only one in the photo that survived WWI.
I wonder if he knew or met these "Boys from Balcarres"? The video should be interesting when it comes online soon. Boys From Balcarres

Grandpa is far right in the back row.

  1. I'm sure you've heard the saying, "It's the OLD men that start the wars, but it's the YOUNG men who have to do the dying."

  2. Hello Ralph. my Great-great uncle was William Kenningale Nevard, originally from Colchester. He was killed at Vimy Ridge on 10th April 1917. Any relation?

    Thanks
    John

    1. John, yes William Kenningale Nevard was a direct relative to my Nevards of Lexden. W.K. Nevard's mother was Elvina Nevard who was an aunt to my grandfather, Horace Nevard. Making William Kenningale Nevard a cousin.

  3. Ralph. I was just poking around on my blog stats and realized you had posted this link. I really appreciate it. Like you, I don't have a lot of information about the whereabouts of my uncles in the battle. I admit, when I see footage or pictures of the battle, I can't help wondering if one of them might be Edwin or Edison. Thanks again for looking. Glen Larson

    1. Hi Glen. I'm assuming you have acquired your uncle's military records from archives Canada? That is where I found out quite a bit of my grandfather's information.
